Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) is a significant public health problem that negatively affects the quality
and life expectancy of the patient and overburdens the health system. There is a considerable demand
for patients with DM2 seeking medical care, especially those who present symptoms of hypoglycemia,
often caused by inadequate use of insulin. The objective was to identify difficulties related to insulin use
in people with DM2. An integrative literature review was carried out and searches were carried out in
the PubMed, LILACS and EMBASE databases, resulting in 280 publications. Screening was done with
the Rayyan application and, after removing duplicates and critically analyzing titles and abstracts, 17
articles were selected for full reading. Finally, 8 publications were included in the study and analyzed
for pattern and theme identification. This review found difficulties for patients in managing the disease,
including insufficient knowledge about the disease and insulin. The main barriers to insulin use reported
were discomfort during application; belief that the disease is not serious; lifestyle restrictions; negative
social stigma; insecurity in handling and applying insulin; difficulties in transport, storage and disposal.
The low number of articles indicates that this topic needs further exploration to reformulate health policies
and programs.
