Abstract

Introduction: The Brazilian Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse biomes worldwide, harboring plant species with remarkable therapeutic potential, particularly related to antioxidant activity. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids play an essential role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species, contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases. Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant activity of plants from the Cerrado of Tocantins using spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods and to correlate this activity with bioactive compound content. Materials and Methods: This experimental and laboratory-based cross-sectional study analyzed leaf extracts of Campomanesia xanthocarpa, Psidium guajava, and Dysphania ambrosioides. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH and FRAP assays, along with quantification of total phenolics and flavonoids. Results: Campomanesia xanthocarpa showed the highest antioxidant activity, followed by Psidium guajava and Dysphania ambrosioides. A strong correlation was observed between phenolic/flavonoid content and antioxidant capacity (r = 0.93). Conclusion: The evaluated species exhibited significant antioxidant potential, highlighting the Cerrado of Tocantins as a valuable source of bioactive compounds.
