PRESERVATION OF COSMETICS AGAINST BURKHOLDERIA CEPACIA COMPLEX USING ESSENTIAL OILS AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS

Abstract

Objective: The increase in cosmetics contamination has raised safety concerns regarding preservatives. Burkholderia cepacia contamination can pose health risks, especially for sensitive or immunocompromised users. This study assessed antimicrobial efficacy of multifunctional compounds and essential oils (EO) compared to standard preservatives. Methodology: Caprylyl glycol (CG), ethylhexylglycerin (ETX), cinnamon and clove EO, methylparaben (MP), propylparaben (PP), phenoxyethanol (PE), benzyl alcohol (BA), potassium sorbate (PS), sodium benzoate (SB), and MCI/MI were tested against Burkholderia cepacia strains and other pathogens. Results: Parabens and MCI/MI showed robust antimicrobial activity. CG and cinnamon/clove EO individually demonstrated effective antimicrobial properties (0.093 mg/mL to 8 mg/mL). Combinations like CG + PE showed additive effects (FICI 0.5 to 1.0), while others were indifferent (FICI 1.0 to 4.0). Emulsion formulations with PE (0.3%), CG (0.3%), and cinnamon EO (0.15%) maintained microbiological stability over 7 days, with no impact on physical-chemical properties. Conclusion: CG combinations effectively preserved cosmetics, offering a viable alternative to traditional preservatives.
