Abstract

A Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida (SIDA) foi descrita, em 1981. Os primeiros casos foram identificados, devido à alta incidência de casos de Sarcoma de Kaposi e pneumonia por Pneumocystis carinii, quadros acompanhados de comprometimento do sistema imune em pacientes homossexuais masculinos procedentes das grandes cidades norte-americanas Nova Yorque, Los Angeles e São Francisco (TOLEDO, 2004). A rápida evolução da doença com conseqüente morte dos pacientes levou à conclusão de que se tratava de uma enfermidade ainda não classificada, de etiologia provavelmente infecciosa e transmissível (ALVES, 2004).
