Abstract

No século XIX, o padrão estético dominante era devalorização da pele clara, por ser um indicador de condiçãosócio‑econômica mais elevada. Grande parcela da população, por estar engajada na agricultura ou em outros tipos de trabalhos braçais, se expunha regularmente ao sol e conseqüentemente apresentava a pele bronzeada. Assim, a manutenção do bronzeado era associada à pobreza. Após a Revolução Industrial, em 1837, mais pessoas de extratos sociais mais desfavorecidos passaram a exercer suas atividades laborais em ambientes internos, protegidos do sol, e a pele mais clara deixou de ser um sinal tão marcante da condição social (SOUZA, 2004).
