Abstract

O uso de preparações à base de plantas medicinais é tão antigo, quanto a civilização, e vem aumentando consideravelmente, nos últimos anos, em decorrência de resultados negativos obtidos em tratamentos com a medicina convencional, efeitos indesejáveis e prejuízos causados pelo uso abusivo e/ou incorreto de medicamentos de origem sintética, o fato de que amplas camadas da população não ter acesso aos medicamentos e à medicina institucionalizada, a consciência ecológica e a crença popular de que o natural é inofensivo (RATES, 2001).
